Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L (older non-II version) focus issue

Picked up a used lens without trying it out. Hunts for focus and makes a weird clunking noise. Even when the focus lock beep sounds, its rarely in focus. Canon won't repair it even if I want to pay because it is the older non-II version. Anyone have a recommendation for a third party repair shop?
