Breitling has been a luxury sports watch standout for decades. As of 2009, Breitling has been a true manufacture with in-house movements. In 2011, Breitling combined these virtues in the Chronomat B04 GMT.
Since its 1982 reboot under brand savior Ernest Schneider, Breitling has been propelled by the success of its Chronomat series. While the Navitimer is the icon and the Superocean flies the flag in the mammoth dive watch sector, the Chronomat is Breitling's sales leader.
Given its breadwinner status, it's no surprise that the 2009 Chronomat B01 was selected as the initial recipient of Breitling's first in-house chronograph movement of the 21st century. In 2011, this Chronomast B04 GMT became the first Breitling to receive the evolved dual-time manufacture caliber.
It's big. At 47mm with a full bracelet and a 500m water resistant case, the Chronomat B04 is a juggernaut of a sports watch that splits the difference between a pilot's watch and a diver. With many of the features of varieties, the Breitling Chronomat B04 GMT offers tremendous versatility to enthusiasts with a taste for epic watches and epic adventures.
The dial is key. Breitling's big boy features surprising nuance and high-grade detailing when examined at length. A deep bronze metallic dial incorporates a subtle rectangular guilloche inner dial, applied polished indexes, and contrasting silver sub-dials. The tachymeter scale floats above the 24-hour track of the GMT in a suspended cantilever arrangement. The effect is striking, and it confirms Breitling's equal regard for micro as well as macro design quality.
Inside the Chronomat's massive carapace, the B04 caliber keeps the time at 28,800 VpH. A modern movement in every sense, Breitling's in-house B04 offers a 72-hour power reserve to match Hublot's Unico and Rolex's Daytona 4130 blow-for-blow. The B04 expands upon the capabilities of the original B01 by adding a second independent time zone that is tracked by the 24-hour "GMT" hand. Automatic winding, a crisp column wheel chronograph, COSC chronometer certification, and a jump-date complete this high-content caliber.
