Video: Breguet In March 2018, Breguet announced its partnership with the Race for Water Foundation, an organisation committed to ocean conservation with the special focus on addressing the threats posed by plastic pollution. This is because 80% of marine pollution originates from plastic waste. As highlighted by the Race for Water Foundation, if nothing is done, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050. Breguet is the main sponsor of the Race for Water Odyssey that is described as “a Swiss project” by Marc A. Hayek, president, Montres Breguet who states that the expedition demonstrates that “concrete solutions exist for the preservation of the oceans worldwide”. This is a five-year round the world expedition that began in 2017 and will end in 2021. The expedition is led by the 100-tonne catamaran “Race for Water” (formerly known as Planet Solar) that is powered by a mix of solar power, hydrogen and the wind. The aim of the expedition is to demonstrate how a ship can circumnavigate the world without using fossil fuels and to conduct 10 scientific programs. Over the five-year expedition, the catamaran is expected to make a total of 38 stopovers. Some 50,000 children, decision makers and government officials are expected to visit the Race for Water catamaran at such stopovers. The objective is to raise awareness of the plastic pollution problem and to promote and implement solutions with sustainable, environmental and social benefits. Why is Breguet associating itself with such a marine theme? Corporate social responsibility is perhaps one reason and another is the fact that Breguet had in the past supplied marine chronometers to ships as tools to calculate longitude at sea. It was in 1815 that Breguet was appointed the official chronometer-maker to the French Royal Navy. The brand’s contribution to maritime history explains the watch brand’s Marine collection. It also explains the Breguet Marine 5517 “Race for Water” Special Edition. The crew of the “Race for Water” catamaran are all equipped with this Breguet special edition which accompanies them throughout the expedition. The “Race for Water” Special Edition features what is called “a custom blue” dial and on it, the Race for Water catamaran in a clous de Paris motif. #Breguet #RaceForWater #TimeWerke
