Bottomless Coffee Band - Sleepless Tonight - BCB Sitkamer Sessions

"Sleepless Tonight" was written way back when during our university days, and was initially recorded for our first album (Room with a View, end of 2014). I wrote this song as a "third month dating anniversary gift" to Esté. One day, I skipped class and drove through to a friend who had a studio in Cape Town and we recorded the song till the early morning hours. I remember driving back to Stellenbosch at 3AM in the morning, feeling really proud and thinking that she is going to LOVE this... The next day I sent it off to Esté just in time as the "anniversary gift" - but it did not have the effect I had hoped for... One thing I should probably add is that I grew up playing drums in a metal band, and this being my musical reference, "Sleepless Tonight" had a much harder (and louder) edge to it: Loud drums, hard hitting guitar riffs and -solos. The lyrics was also very hard to make out due to the genre. I learnt a valuable lesson that day - metal songs don't necessarily make for the best love songs... at least not in my case... When we started working on our first album, we sat down with a collection of songs we had written and after playing everything to the producer he said that "sleepless tonight" has some serious potential - we would just need to change the rhythm, the genre, the loud drums, the guitar riffs etc etc... basically re-work the entire song... I thought to myself; "...wish someone could have told me this before..." And I commenced to rework the song into a ballad. I still think it is one of our best songs; thanks to producers and engineers contributing to our art. Being in studio again, we appreciate the ones who take our work and enhance it into beautiful music. We appreciate the people behind the scenes...and the love songs. The song is an ode to that magical feeling of being so in love that you cannot sleep at night, rolling around in your bed and thinking of that special someone.
