Read the blog post: https://bourgeonandbloom.com/blogs/health/the-body-virtue We're starting a new series of blog posts here at Bourgeon & Bloom called "Bloom: A Woman's Guide To Wholistic Health" where we interview women who are experts in healthy living and ask them to share their experiences and knowledge. Our mission is to empower women to get healthy, stay active and spend more time with family, and this series is one more way we want to make that happen so that more women can benefit and we can make a bigger impact together. In this post, we are going to hear from Dr. Jessie, founder of The Body Virtue. Dr. Jessie, M.D.A.M. (Medical Doctor in Alternative Medicine) is a certified sports nutritionist and an accredited Doctor of Integrative Medicine. The company she founded is a Medical Consultation Service that promotes a life style of well-balanced health by looking at the human body as a whole. Without further ado, here is what Dr. Jessie has to say! 1. What is your story? I am an Australian Naturopathic Doctor, working in California. Both my mother and Grandfather are medical doctors, so my passion to help others started at a young age. Australian health care is socialized and it is illegal to advertise pharmaceuticals, so the level of patient care in Australia is exceptional. I would like to bring that same mentality and opportunity for patient care here. 2. Why is it important for women to live a healthy lifestyle? Live the life that you deserve! You want to be able to enjoy retirement. If you are not preventative and take care of your body now, it can create ailments later. For example: Calcium is incredibly important for young females. We stop absorbing bone density around the age of 30. If you are vitamin D deficient you do not absorb calcium effectively (the two go hand in hand). One does not need early onset of Osteoporosis. 3. How would you recommend women get healthy? Firstly, appreciate and love the body you have. Work with your strengths. Then, eat to nourish, ensuring that you are getting all the vitamins and minerals you need. Also, be mindful of your thoughts, they impact your overall health. Lastly, get moving! 4. What are the biggest struggles women who are trying to get healthy face? How can they overcome them? It’s different for all ages but usually life gets in the way and women are natural givers. Make sure you prioritize some self-care so you can be the best version of yourself first, then you can give and lead by example for others. 5. How do you stay motivated to live a healthy lifestyle? I personally suffer from an auto immune disease and usually after 2 days of bad eating or not exercising I start to feel sick and sluggish. When I keep a balanced lifestyle with exercise and clean eating—I don’t deprive myself—I feel more energetic, my mind stays clear and positive and my disease symptoms are at bay. Pros outweigh the cons by far. 6. How do you manage living a healthy lifestyle while managing your other responsibilities? It all depends on the individual’s health goal. Prioritizing time. Sunday afternoon I meal plan for the week so I don’t run out of time which encourages me to order food or make some unhealthy choices. Once I know my patient times I will plan the day and time I have for exercise and lock it in my schedule. There are some days following my treatment (infusions) where I am incredibly run down. On those days where I can’t fit a 30min run or a class I will do a little circuit at home (sit ups, push-ups, & squats) 7. As an expert, where do you go for education on healthy living? I am always looking on Pub Medical queries for new case studies and health results. There is a lot of information out there, it is always best to speak with a health care professional and find what is right for you and your family. I always enjoy reading books or articles written by Dr. Michael Mosely (“The Fast Diet”) and Dr. Cate Shanahan (“Deep Nutrition”) 8. What is one question I should ask you but didn’t? What’s your response? There is a lot of debate at the moment on Coconut oil and if it is actually healthy. In my opinion yes, Coconut Oil has many health benefits. Although, it is important to be mindful about the amount consumed. I would recommend consuming no more than 2 table spoons a day. Also, be mindful if you are cooking with coconut oil and it is refined it can be heated up to 400F and if unrefined it can only be heated up to 350F to ensure that you do not lose any of the health benefits.
