1:55 a.m. Jan. 23, 2016: I’m here at Mount Vernon Square in Washington, DC. The blizzard is raging around me. Winds have died down a bit but still lots of blowing snow, and snow coming down pretty heavily in fairly small flakes. I’ve measured between 6-10 inches of snow so we’ll go with eight inches as the measurement thus far. Forecasters predict anywhere from 20 to 30 inches as the storm continues today. It’s a little difficult to get an accurate measurement because the snow is blowing around so much. 12:47 p.m.: Greetings from the National Mall I’m here in front of the U.S. Capitol. I can report a measurement averaging 14 inches. Snow has started letting up but is supposed to continue for several more hours. It’s been a nice walk here along the Mall. Not all that windy right now but every once in awhile we’ll get some gusts that will blow the snow all over the place. I don’t need my snow goggles on right now because the winds aren’t terrible. I was hoping to find more snow out here but unfortunately 14 inches is the most I can report at this time. 2:37 p.m.: Just got back home from a 2.5-hour traipse through the snow to the Capitol and back, about 4.6 miles walked. The conditions were actually not too bad. Now I’ve been home a few minutes and the wind has really picked up and the snow is blowing all around. .
