April 28, 2019 – EDINBURG, Texas – Senior Coleman Grubbs hit a walk-off home run to send The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team to a 7-6, 10-inning victory on Sunday and a three-game sweep of Seattle U at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Winners of five-straight Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series, UTRGV (28-14, 14-4 WAC) is in first place with nine WAC games remaining. This was UTRGV's second WAC sweep of the season and second in three series.
Grubbs came up against Desmond Parisotto (0-2) with the bases clean and two outs in the 10th, and after working the count full, launched the final pitch over the left field bullpen for his third home run of the season.
That made a winner of sophomore Max Balderrama Jr. (4-0), who pitched two hitless innings, striking out two.
UTRGV had to rally back twice in the game, including from down 6-5 in the ninth. Junior Christian Sepulveda reached on an error to start the inning, and then junior Conrado Diaz hit a ground ball to second baseman Jacob Prater. The throw to second went into left field, allowing Sepulveda to score to tie the game.
In the sixth, UTRGV trailed 3-1, but the first four batters had hits, including a two-run single by junior Tyler Torres and an RBI-single by junior Elijah Alexander. A passed ball later scored a run as UTRGV took a 5-3 lead.
UTRGV scored its first run in the second on a single by freshman Vela alum Aaron Galvan.
Torres reached base all five times, going 3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Senior Anthony Gomez finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Connor O'Brien led Seattle U (9-33, 4-14 WAC) by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. He drove-in Seattle U's first run with a first-inning double. Chase Wells followed with an RBI-single.
Seattle U went up 3-1 in the fifth on a Max Werner home run and then scored three in the eighth on run-scoring hits by Kyler Murphy, Jake Taylor and Julian Kodama.
UTRGV embarks on an eight-game road trip starting with the first of two at No. 15 Texas Tech on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest Plus.
