Baoli in Hindu Rao Hospital, Pir Ghaib, Mutiny Memorial, Delhi -
Mutiny Memorial :
This memorial is also known as Ajitgarh which was built by British officials. It was built in 1862 in the memory of the British & Indian Soldiers who lost their lives during the first Independence war of India in 1857. It is on the road of Kamla Nehru Ridge just in front of Hindu Rao Hospital, near Civil line. This building is five-storey and its base is octagonal. Names of the soldiers are in scripted on all seven faces in Hindi , English and in the Urdu language with the date of their birth. In 1972 , the Indian government renamed it from Mutiny Memorial to Ajitgarh and remove stones which were saying Indian freedom fighters as “Enemy”.
HINDU RAO HOSPITAL BAOLI :
this Baoli also has significance in terms of freedom fighters as this was also the only source of water for the British soldiers surrounded by the revolting soldiers of 1857. As with the other Baolis over the decades dumping garbage and overgrown vegetation completely destroyed the existence of the Baoli.
The Baoli was restored recently by ASI clearing of its debris and completely cleaned up. Rainwater harvesting was used to reactivate the water storage capability of the Baoli. Water though minimum can now be seen.
Pir Ghaib :
Pir Ghaib meaning ‘Vanishing Saint’ is located in the heart of the northern ridge of Delhi. It had been built in 1630 AD by Feroz Shah Tughlaq. Pir Ghaib lies southwest of Chauburji Masjid in the grounds of Hindu Rao Hospital. It is rubble built double storey structure, with the remains of a "Baoli" or step well. The monument has been so named after a saint suddenly disappeared while meditating at the cenotaph in the northern apartment of the monument. It has been built either as a Kushk-I-Shikar (hunting lodge) or Kushk-I-Jahan-Numa (world showing palace).
