A highly specialized team brought him back to life–multiple times. When a patient overdoses and is taken to Yale Medicine, he or she is typically treated with narcan, an opioid antidote. Once stabilized, patients are seen by Project ASSERT, a service that connects patients in the Emergency Department directly with community rehab facilities. Addiction is a chronic disease,” explains Gail D’Onofrio, MD, Chair of Emergency Medicine at Yale Medicine, where it’s not just about saving a life. It’s about helping patients to recover through ongoing treatment."
