Compared to its motorsport counterparts, the Silk Way Rally is relatively young. It's only been in existence for nine years. The Eurasian off-road rally raid started life in Russia in 2009, with the first race running from Kazan to Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. The race was originally organised by the team behind the Dakar Rally. On July 20, 2018, the eighth edition of Silk Way Rally set off on a new route from previous editions of the event. Because of logistical problems with the runway needed for the massive Antonov 124 cargo planes that were to transfer the vehicles from China to Russia, the event organizers have decided to split this year's event in two. The 2018 Silk Way Rally is an all-Russian affair that runs for seven days and seven stages across the south of the country, from the port city of Astrakhan to the capital, Moscow.
