Albert the Good
From Albert Herring
Libretto by Eric Crozier
Music by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)
Albert the Good, sometimes called Why Did She Stare? Is the only piece on today’s program taken from an opera. This aria from Britten’s comedy in 3 acts gives a peek into the life of do-good pushover Albert who has just been awarded the crown at the May Day Festival. The other characters of the opera had slipped some rum into his lemonade to help him give a speech. In Albert the Good he has just arrived home from this event belligerently drunk and reflects on the events of the evening and the beautiful Nancy whom he had seen there.
