Cowboy Poetry In today's hi-tech world with the focus on TV and the internet many people don't know about the longstanding tradition of Cowboy Poetry. Back in the day, after a hard day of work, cowboys would gather around a campfire and entertain one another with tall tales and folk songs. Illiteracy was common, so poetic forms were used to aid memory and stories were passed down through generations. Many poets tend to focus on the historic cowboy lifestyle, but one thing is usually certain, and that is how Cowboy poetry captures the moment using romantic imagery. While the GCAT team was at Reesor Ranch in Saskatchewan's Cypress Hills we got a taste of some Cowboy poetry first hand. Scott Reesor recited a few poems that he had written a few years ago. The poem titled Another Day in the Chute with Pa tells the story of Scott and his Dad, who was 79 at the time, getting tangled up with one of the cows in the corral. Although many people don't realise it, Cowboy poetry continues to be written and celebrated today. Many cities in the United States and Canada even have annual "roundups" dedicated to Cowboy poetry, and Cowboy Poetry Week is celebrated during April each year. It's definitely worth seeing first hand, so get yourself out West, befriend a Cowboy, and enjoy some Cowboy Poetry.
