517 - The Most Relieving Ear Wax Removal Ever Causing Client to Faint

Ear wax removal is necessary when ear wax build up becomes impacted. Symptoms causes by earwax blockage include: earache (otalgia), conductive hearing loss, blocked ear, vertigo, tinnitus, itchiness and irritation, occlusion etc. The client attended with excruciating ear ache in the left ear due to a large lump of solid, almost stone-like, ear wax plug. It was so painful that she attended Accident & Emergency the night before. The client advised that she had been using ear wax drops for a couple of week. However, the ear wax plug was still extremely hard. The client was very anxious due to her ear ache and was reluctant for me to even examine the ear. I had to ask her friends who attended to come into the clinic room to help calm her down. I decided to use Henkel Forceps due to their larger surface area and better grip to pull the ear wax plug out in one go. As I was removing the ear wax plug, the client was moving her head due to the pain and I had to try and calm her down by telling her it was coming out of her ear. After removing the ear wax plug, the client was the most relieved I have ever seen any client before. As the ear wax plug was extremely hard and had skin adhesions, there was some minor bleeding on the medial bony ear canal wall. This will heal on it’s own accord. Nonetheless, I have advised her to avoid getting water in her ear and to attend a follow-up appointment with myself in a week’s time for me to examine. In fact, the client was so relieved and shocked by the size of the ear wax plug, she became faint. With the help of her friends, we had to lay her down and elevate her feet above her heart.
