The Swanage Railway held their "2016 Spring Diesel Gala" event between 5th - 8th May 2016. They ran a very intense timetable utilising 4 sets of rolling stock and no less than 12 diesel locomotives on the friday to sunday .and on the "Preview" day a steam locomotive, but only a few diesels. Trains ran from the southern end at Swanage and to the Northern recent extension of the line as far as the viaduct over the River Frome. The weather was magnificent throughout the entire event and coupled with the beautiful scenery made the crowds come out from near and afar. Diesel locomotives participating were D832 "Warship" class named "Onslaught" ,Class 31 number D5580 (31162), 3 "Cromptons" were in service 2 in BR Blue livery numbers 33111 and 33201 the third was in two tone green number D6515 named after enthusiast "Lt.Jenny Lewis RN". Then for me the star attraction was a class 40 number D213 (40013) named "Andania" after the Cunard passenger ship. A pair of class 20s were also in service both in BR Livery, numbers 20142 and 20205 running in standard formation and also "Nose End First" formation which used to be unpopular with drivers when they were still in BR service, also a speed restriction would be in place due to limited visibility, this obviously did not effect their running on the Swanage Railway. "Peak" class 46 number 46045 and later to become 97404 before her withdrawal from service now under her original number of D182 was running trains as was class 50 number 50035 "Ark Royal". A pair of class 08 diesel shunters were deputised to run in "Top n Tail" formation with two Brake Vans between giving passengers Brake Van rides along the route.. The only unplanned sustitute due to the "West Country" class number 34070 "Manston" awaiting some parts was the implementation of steam locomotive 80104 a 4MT class 2-6-4T engine as "Manston's" substitute. The trains ran near to perfect timing for the whole event and seemed pretty well patronised so hats off to all the organisers and preservationists involved and of course to the staff and train crews who did a magnificent job. This video coverage is in two parts about an hour long each due to the volume of trains that ran over the 4 day period and I have added a slide show at the beginning of each part , I hope you enjoy what you see, if not just let me know...
