Since that time the CX-9 has enjoyed great success on the market but has yet to receive a redesign like most the competition in this segment. For the 2013 model year Mazda has updated the exterior on the CX-9 which is more in line with some of the other vehicles they offer like the Mazda6. The base price on the 2013 Mazda CX-9 is $29,785 which makes it a great value and an excellent alternative to a minivan.
Most crossover SUVs are operated by a 3.5 liter V-6. The 2013 Mazda CX-9 is no different. The engine is a 3.7 liter V-6 that makes a healthy 273 horsepower and 270 lb-ft. of torque. Fuel economy is 17 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. Mazda offers the CX-9 in both FWD and AWD variants. The only transmission offered is a 6-speed automatic.
The Mazda CX-9 is essentially an alternative to a minivan like the Dodge Caravan. Most buyers are going to be those with a family. The cargo area is very versatile as both the 2nd and 3rd row of seats fold down allowing you access to a ton of cargo room. The 2013 Mazda CX-9 is available in 3 different trim levels: Sport, Touring, and top of the line Grand Touring. When you opt for a fully loaded Grand Touring with AWD the price is upwards of $40k with all the bells and whistles.
From a driving perspective, the 2013 Mazda CX-9 is very capable, it has a nice upright seating position, and it's very comfortable. There are a lot of great options when it comes to the crossover SUV segment. Despite being one of the oldest competitors in this segment, the Mazda CX-9 continues to look relatively fresh thanks to the new Kodo Styling Refresh. Expect a new CX-9 sometime in the near future, but for now this crossover SUV continues to be a great value.
