Car culture starts where the assembly line ends. With only 71 Hemi Challengers assembled for the 1971 model year, enthusiasts took to creating their own versions like this awesome example. Fresh out of a frame up restoration that restored the car to its original interior and exterior colors, a host of upgrades make this one of the most fun Challengers to drive and own. Ready for Hemi power? Your chariot has arrived.
While there's no doubt that Top Banana Yellow or Plum Crazy Purple suit these cars well, there is something about GA4 Light Gunmetal Metallic that completely transforms the personality of the car. The coat on this car has a perfect blend of gray and blue, offering the E-body a sophisticated look that brighter Chrysler Corporation offerings simply couldn't. The paintwork is first rate and looks great from every angle, with accurate reflections all around.
With no stripes, all accent work is left to the trim. Up top, a new black vinyl top does a great job adding some contrast while chrome door handles and chrome sport mirrors add some visual flare to the crisp body lines. An R/T-exclusive hood rest above a stock 71-exclusive split grille while the rear also remains in factory dress.
Between the fenders, a 426 Hemi crate engine utilizes forged aluminum pistons, a hydraulic cam, a Holley four-barrel carb, a dual plane aluminum intake and cast iron heads to crank out 465hp and 485lb-ft of torque. At the front of the bay, an alternator, power steering pump and fan spin off engine power while an aftermarket radiator keeps things cool. Factory pieces such as a correct voltage regulator, windshield wiper motor and wrinkled finish valve covers add some authenticity to the package.
Underneath the car, solid black floorpans and fresh hardware provide the backdrop for an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission which transfers power out to the Dana 60 differential. The suspension has been left in its original configuration with torsion bars up front and leaf springs out back but power steering and Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes make pushing that setup a lot more fun. At the corners, 17" Chip Foose wheels wrapped in meaty tires complete the look.
Open the doors and a fully restored H6X9 black vinyl interior offers all the amenities needed. Features include bucket seats, a center console, an AM radio and a rally instrument cluster with a tachometer, electric clock and 150mph speedometer. The interior presents and new as does the fully restored trunk complete with a full size spare and appropriate mat.
Fully sorted and ready to cruise, this '71 Challenger is a refreshing break from its High Impact siblings. With Hemi power, a modernized driving experience and a classic look, you'll thank yourself with every walk to the garage.
