This breed was developed in the late 19th century in Austria and Northern Italy. Haflingers are generally compact and chestnut in color. They have a distinctive gait that is both energetic and smooth. They are well-muscled yet elegant horses. While this specific breed was developed in the late 19th century, its ancestry can be traced back to the middle ages. Haflingers were developed for mountain terrain and are known for their hardiness. Number 9 Akhal-Teke The Akhal-Teke breed is the national emblem of Turkmenistan. They are known for their speed, endurance, intelligence and the distinctive metallic sheen of their coat. Their shiny beautiful coat has earned them the nickname of "Golden Horses.They are actually very hardy and adapted particularly to survive in severe climate conditions. They are one of the oldest existing horse breeds in the world. Number 8 Knabstrupper Best known for its unusual beautiful coat, the Danish Knabstrupper horse breed is used in general riding, carriage horses and the circus. They also do well in dressage and show jumping. It has been crossbred with other horses and it's uncertain if any purebreds remain. Today Knabstrupper horses are bred all around the world, not just in Denmark. Number 7 Marwari The Marwari are a rare breed from the Marwar (Jodhpur) region of India. They can be easily identified by their unique, inward-turning ear tips. The Marwari are a hardy breed that is descended from crossing Arabian horses with native Indian ponies. The Rathors, traditional rulers of the Marwar region, were the first to breed this kind of horse in the 12th century. These horses have been praised for their loyalty and bravery on the battlefield. Number 6 Gypsy Horse The Gypsy horse is native to the British Isles, although it is particularly associated with the Roma (gypsy) traveling people of Britain and Ireland. Also known as the "Irish Cob,". It wasn't considered a breed until 1996. This breed is highly prized for its feathering, or the long hair that starts below the knee and flows over the hooves. These horses are indeed beautiful. Number 5 Friesian The Friesian is a large horse freed from Friesland in the Netherlands. Although tall and heavy, they are quite nimble and actually very graceful. With a natural tendency to carry its body ele­gantly.They are black.They have a very strong, muscled body. And they have beautiful and thick mane and tail as well as feathers on their lower legs son making up our list. Friesians are known to be the Netherlands’ warhorses and are sometimes called the Belgian Black. Number 4 Arabian horse The Arabian horse is practi­cally the most widespread horse breed in the world. They are characterized by their beautifully chis­eled bone structure, an arched neck supporting a concave profile, a level croup, and a high-carried tail. They are known to be very sensitive and intelligent as well as spirited and energetic. Did you know that most modern horse breeds have an Arabian as one of their ances­tors? Number 3 Icelandic Horse As the name suggests, it is a breed created in Iceland. It is a small, sometimes pony sized horse that has a long life and a strong body. They have a dou­ble coat that protects them from cold temperatures. They are friendly and are not easily spooked. Here is one fun fact for you- Iceland has a law that says when an Icelandic Horse is sent to an­other country, they are not allowed to return. Can anyone tell us the reason behind this? Number 2 The Clydesdale The Clydesdale that comes from Scotland is also called “Clydes”. This horse is said to be the “breed that built Australia”. They are usually bay in color with white mark­ings. These beautiful horses have extensive feathers on their lower legs and are generally tall horses. They have a strong body that can haul heavy loads when hitched in teams.
