Wife of "El Chapo" Arrested in the US for Helping Run Mexican Drug Empire

The wife of the infamous Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia on Monday.

She is accused of helping her husband run his criminal empire and conspiring to plot his two escapes from Mexican prisons.

She is expected to appear in federal court in Washington on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old former beauty queen, Emma Coronel Aispuro, is a dual citizen of the US and Mexico, and has two young daughters with Guzman.

“El Chapo” was extradited to the US in 2017 and is now serving a life sentence.

As head of the Sinaloa cartel, he was responsible for smuggling huge quantities of cocaine and other drugs into the United States. According to prosecutors, he had an “army of sicarios,” or “hit men,” who were under orders to kidnap, torture and kill anyone who got in his way.
