The New York Mayor and Governor spoke to people outside the apartment block where a fire killed 19 people in New York on Sunday.

“We are indeed a city in shock” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The fire broke out in the morning with most of the victims found on the 19th storey. Hochul promised help to the families of the victims, stating: “we will not forget you, we will not abandon you, we are here for you.”

Around 200 firefighters were sent to get the blaze, which officials believe began due to a broken electric heater, under control. According to New York City Fire Commissioner Dan Nigro, the fire was started by a portable electric heater in a bedroom.

The fire is the deadliest in New York for 30 years, with 19 people dead and another 32 in hospital.

SOT, Eric Adams, New York City Mayor: “I think that it is a very significant moment to have just the unification of our city, during this time of a tragedy. This is no longer a city or state where governor and the mayor, our elected officials, our firefighters, our police officers, our OEM, all of our entities. We are in the energy of where there is a crisis in this city or state, we are coming together.”

SOT, Kathy Hochul, New York Governor: “Thank you mayor, we are indeed a city in shock. It’s impossible to go into that room, where scores of families, who are in such grief, who are in pain. To see in a mother’s eyes as I held her, who lost her entire family. It’s hard to fathom what they’re going through but I went table to table, helped children make their ramen noodles and eat their pizza and let them know one thing, and the mayor and I are united in this - we will not forget you, we will not abandon you, we are here for you.”

SOT, Dan Nigro, New York City Fire Commissioner: “The marshals have determined through physical evidence, and through first-hand accounts by the residents that this fire started in a bedroom, in a portable electric heater.”
