Cars were left buried in mud outside a New Orleans petrol station in the wake of Hurricane Ida on Tuesday.

Several nearby electricity poles could also be seen damaged, as over one million houses and businesses in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi were left without power, which officials said might take weeks to restore.

According to official reports, two people died as a result of the hurricane so far, one of whom was in New Orleans at the time. Hundreds of others are still reportedly stuck in their homes due to severe flooding caused by Ida, which was downgraded to a tropical depression as it continues to travel inland.
