US diplomat Wendy Sherman claims Beijing Olympics may affect "timing" of Ukraine invasion

United States Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman claimed that the timing of the Beijing Winter Olympics may affect the date of a potential use of military force against Ukraine by Russia, in an online conversation hosted by Yalta European Strategy, on Wednesday.
“We certainly see every indication, that (Russian President Vladimir Putin) he is going to use military force, sometime perhaps now and middle of February,” she said.
“We all are aware that the Beijing Olympics begin on February 4, the opening ceremony and President Putin expects to be there, I think that probably President Xi Jinping would not be ecstatic if Putin chose that moment to invade Ukraine, so that may affect his timing and his thinking,” she added.
The US and the West have warned that Russia is planning to invade Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly dismissed the accusations as “disinformation”.
