China does not need Russian gas. But Russia intends to build the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline.
The proposed pipeline would bring gas from the vast reserves of the Yamal Peninsula in Western Siberia - Europe’s main source of gas supplies - to China, the world’s largest energy consumer and a growing consumer of gas.
China refused to finance the Power of Siberia gas pipeline, which cost Russia 1.1 trillion rubles. After its launch in January 2020, Beijing politely accepted 1.57 billion cubic meters instead of the agreed 5 billion and stopped deliveries as unnecessary. There was no place for Russian gas in the Chinese market due to pipeline supplies from Central Asia, cheap LNG from Australia, Qatar and the United States, as well as growing domestic production.
