‘Trash of the Titans: Russian Garbage Mountain Casts Shadow On Leningrad Population’

Russians living near one of the country’s largest landfills say they can barely breathe due to noxious fumes emanating from the site in the Leningrad region.

The 50m high trash pile covers 33 hectares and received around 1,000 tons of waste every day.

Locals call it Drozdenko Peak, in honor of the region’s governor.

Currently holding close to 30 million cubic meters of rubbish, the site is a major concern to Russia’s environmental agency, Rosprirodnadzor.

They fined the site’s owner last year and filed a suit demanding that new dumping cease at the overloaded site. But a court ruled that business operations could continue.
