Spain has deployed troops after the arrival of thousands of migrants at its borders.

Nearly 8,000 people have reportedly reached Ceuta since early Monday, Spanish officials say.

Footage shows police crouching for cover as barriers were pelted with stones.

The migrants are thought to have either jumped fences or swam onto European soil.

The sudden influx has created a humanitarian crisis for Ceuta, the Spanish city in North Africa.

The number getting in slowed after Spain deployed additional police officers and soldiers, but the arrivals didn’t stop even when anti-riot police dispersed crowds hoping to cross over.

At least 4,000 migrants were returned to Morocco, according to Spain’s Interior Ministry.

Many arriving on Tuesday were sub-Saharan Africans who often migrate to flee poverty or violence at home.
