Five US lawmakers paid a surprise visit to President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei on Friday, as relations between the island nation and China remain strained.

Tsai commented at length on the positive relations between the USA and Taiwan, noting their cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic and military partnership.

Regarding US-Taiwanese relations, Tsai commented, “Taiwan will also strengthen cooperation with the United States to jointly defend our shared values of democracy and freedom and ensure the peaceful and stable development of the region.”

Tsai ended the speech by thanking visitors for their ‘special’ visit, which she said expressed the ‘family friendship’ the two nations share.

The visit marks the second trip by US lawmakers to Taiwan in a month, and comes at a time of heightened tensions between Taiwan and the mainland, with China having long asserted its sovereignty over the self-governing island.
