European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell addressed the necessity for the bloc to have the ability to act quickly and independently from other states in future crises during a press conference following the informal meeting of EU defence ministers in Kranj on Thursday.
“If we want to be able to act autonomously and not to be dependent of the choices made by others, even if these others are our friends and allies, then we have to develop our own capacities,” said Borrell, adding, “We have the armies altogether, we have the resources, the problem is to have the coordination among us, and the will to mobilise these resources.”
During the meeting, ministers discussed a document named strategic compass, aiming at harmonising defence ambitions and response capabilities of the European Union. The document is due to be drafted by the end of the year.
