Russian President Vladimir Putin was asked about his plans to run for re-election in 2024, at the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok on Friday.

Host Sergei Brilev asked whether Putin planned to attend the APEC summit in Brunei in 2024 or to “send someone else” in his place.

“We’ll see, we need to keep going until 2024, you see, pandemics are shaking us from everywhere. So, we must continue working, without thinking about such major international events that are due to happen in four years,” Putin said.

When Brilev noted that the summit was scheduled to take place after Russia’s presidential election, Putin said, “This is why I’m saying, let us live in peace until then.”

The Russian leader also said it was up to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to decide on their future in the government, as the two are heading the candidates’ list for the United Russia party in the upcoming State Duma elections. The ministers are not obliged to take parliament seats if elected.

“They are doing great on their posts, and the colleagues just asked me if they could head the list [of candidates], to show that everything that the United Russia party is doing is truly becoming a reality, also with the help of these people,” Putin said.

He also commented on the Russia-Ukraine relations, saying he would be like to see a Ukrainian president take part in economic forums in Russia’s Vladivostok or St. Petersburg one day.

“I very much hope that it will happen, because I believe the situation, which we are facing today, is absolutely abnormal and unnatural. Sooner or later - and it better be sooner - we will restore our relations with Ukraine in a full-fledged format,” Putin stated.

SOT, Sergey Brilev, moderator of the panel discussion (Russian): “And to Brunei, for APEC summit? It’s in November 2024. You will attend it personally, Mr. President, or will you send someone else instead? “

Vladimir Putin, Russian President: “We’ll see, we need to keep going until 2024, you see, pandemics are shaking us from everywhere. So, we must continue working, without thinking about such major international events that are due to happen in four years.”

Brilev: “There will be an internal event – the presidential elections.”

Putin: “I do understand it. This is why I’m saying, let us live in peace until then.”

Brilev: “Can I ask you more about the future? Won’t it be a pity to let Shoigu and Lavrov go to the State Duma?”

Putin: “It will. They are doing great on their posts, and the colleagues just asked me if they could head the list [of candidates], to show that everything that the United Russia party is doing is truly becoming a reality, also with the help of these people.”

Brilev: “But all the decisions will be made in September, won’t they?”

Putin: “Decisions, first of all, must be made by them. They are the ones who must make these decisions”.

Brilev: “And once again about the future. How do you think, will we one day see the Ukrainian president come here, to this forum in Vladivostok, or to St. Petersburg [to St. Petersburg International Economic Forum]?”

Putin: “Why not? Of course, I very much hope that it will happen, because I believe the situation, which we are facing today, is absolutely abnormal and unnatural. Sooner or later - and it better be sooner - we will restore our relations with Ukraine in a full-fledged format.”
