The Russian armed forces have been attempting to modernise their armament for decades. Among other efforts they have been aiming to procure a replacement for the Kalashnikov platform almost since the procurement of the AK-74, they have been updating the PK machine gun family, and proposing new forms of the RPK. Additionally, Russia has been updating its anti-tank capabilities for infantry forces.
