A group of 250 soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces arrived at Volgograd’s Gumrak airport on Sunday to take part in the Russian-Indian drills ‘Indra-2021’, the Southern Military District (SMD) of Russia reported.
From the airport, the soldiers went to a field camp at the Prudboy training ground in the Volgograd Region.
The Indian servicemen could be seen coming out of the airport building, where they were met by their Russian counterparts. After the ceremony, the Indian soldiers were given bread and salt and sang Russian songs.
Soldiers from both countries will be training with about 100 pieces of Russian military equipment, including BMP-3 armoured tracked fighting vehicles, T-90A tanks, ‘Grad’ multiple rocket launchers, armoured personnel carriers and cross-country vehicles.
As part of the drills, military personnel will practise fighting in various weather conditions, airborne landing operations, the landing of tactical troops by helicopter and repulsing enemy unmanned aerial vehicle strikes.
Indra-2021 will be held from August 1 to 13 in the Volgograd Region.
SOT Arutyun Darbinyan, Deputy Commander of Eighth Combined Arms Army of Southern Military District, Lieutenant General: “We are preparing to hold a joint exercise ‘Indra-2021’ with the Indian side. Today, we are welcoming troops of the Indian side at the Gumrak airport. This event is very important. The exercise is important for both states as an exercise that develops military, political cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of India.”
SOT Arutyun Darbinyan, Deputy Commander of Eighth Combined Arms Army of Southern Military District, Lieutenant General: “According to the plan, 250 people from each side and about 100 pieces of military equipment will be involved. The latest equipment in service with the Russian army will be involved. The options for the actions of troops in the new conditions will be considered, taking into account the current military challenges of both states.”
SOT Arutyun Darbinyan, Deputy Commander of Eighth Combined Arms Army of Southern Military District, Lieutenant General: “We assume that at the moment part of the Indian Armed Forces is already armed with Russian weapons. Taking into account the fact that our military and economic cooperation is very close and developing, some of the equipment they will look at and drills, I assume that in the future they will arm the Indian Armed Forces.”
SOT Arutyun Darbinyan, Deputy Commander of Eighth Combined Arms Army of Southern Military District, Lieutenant General: “The exercise is taking place in Volgograd on historically legendary Russian land. We understand that our armed forces broke the back of the Nazi creep here in 1942, it is very symbolic. First, the morale of the troops, the moral and psychological state. [Secondly,] people should know where the roots of victory are, where the roots of the courage of the Russian people are.”
