Peruvian police made a shocking discovery near Miguel Castro prison on the outskirts of Lima. They found a 200m underground tunnel leading directly to the prison food court.

The tunnel was built for the escape of drug cartel members and other inmates but the entrance was located in a residential neighbourhood before its completion.

Two prisoners belonging to the Mexican Sinaloa cartel reportedly masterminded the scheme, hiring six foreign nationals to do the actual digging.

Authorities say the construction took about six months and was planned for a year. It’s believed around $500k of drug-trafficking money was invested in the project.

Neighbours confirmed hearing construction works at night but didn’t suspect anything.
