It’s a diplomatic trip that could come back to haunt both Nancy Pelosi and Taiwan itself.

The arrival of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives in the self-ruled island nation came amid soaring tensions with Beijing.

China, which views Taiwan as part of its territory, repeatedly warned of retaliation if Pelosi visited, warning that its army won’t sit idly by.

Touching down in Taipei, her arrival coincided with high levels of military movement and preparations, perilously close to the Taiwanese border.
