‘Myanmar Military Coup: Civilian Exodus From Yangon as Martial Law Imposed’

Citizens are fleeing major cities in Myanmar as an upswing in police violence saw the United Nations civilian death toll jump to 149.

Martial law has been imposed in large areas of Yangon, where anti-coup protesters hurled fire bombs at police lines in retaliation against the crackdown.

Authorities have faced condemnation for their heavy-handed tactics, using tear gas, rubber bullets, and even live ammunition to disperse crowds.

The coup’s bloodiest day so far came on Sunday, when 74 people were reported to have lost their lives.
