Ruptly is live from Manger Square outside the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on Saturday, December 4, where the holiday season kicks off as a traditional giant Christmas tree lights up with hundreds of bright, sparkling decorations.

The Christmas tree, traditionally erected in front of the Church of the Nativity, the birthplace of Jesus according to Christian tradition, attracts many visitors each year and marks the start of the holiday celebrations.

Bethlehem has struggled since the coronavirus pandemic started, as many hotels and businesses were shut down. Although earlier this month, Israel reopened its borders to vaccinated tourists, relatively few are expected to travel this holiday season since a two-week ban on foreign visitors came into force this Monday.
