Japan: Crowds gather to watch Olympics closing ceremony outside stadium

Despite COVID-19 restrictions and pleas by officials to watch from home, hundreds of Tokyo residents flocked to the Olympic Stadium on Sunday to watch the fireworks marking the closure of the 32nd summer Olympic Games.

During the event, several protesters showed up to denounce the Games, as police observed without attempting to enforce social distancing rules.

Initially planned to be held in 2020, the Games were pushed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with coronavirus cases increasing as the event went on. Organisers and Olympic officials, including International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, have denied any link between the Olympics and the case surge.

The next summer Olympics will take place in Paris in 2024.
