Iran: FM spox discusses situation in Panjshir, Vienna nuclear talks

Washington should come to the JCPOA negotiations in Vienna with a “real agenda” and return to its commitments the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said during a presser in Tehran on Monday.

Khatibzadeh was speaking to the press on a number of topics including the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan’s Panjshir province when he made the comments.

The spokesperson also discussed recent events in Afghanistan’s Panjshir province following the Taliban taking over the area, criticising Afghan leaders and “foreign intervention” in the country which he said has “resulted in nothing but defeat for that invading force.”

SOT, Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Farsi): “The news coming from Panjshir is really worrying. Last night’s attacks are strongly condemned. The martyrdom of Afghan leaders is deeply regrettable. The external intervention you mentioned must be considered. We are investigating it. But everyone should know that the history of Afghanistan has shown that foreign intervention, direct and indirect, has resulted in nothing but defeat for that invading force.”

SOT, Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Farsi): “I strongly emphasised the principle policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the issue of Panjshir. It should be resolved through dialogue, mediation, and the presence of all the leaders of Afghanistan. Neither side should allow this path to lead to fratricide. The Taliban must also abide by its obligations under international law and it should fulfill its own commitments, whatever it said. Hunger for the people of Panjshir, siege of the people of Panjshir region, water and electricity cuts in Panjshir region, as it has been reported to us, is a matter of concern.”

SOT, Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Farsi): “The parties should not make miscalculations and should not go in the direction of affecting the ongoing negotiations in Vienna. Everyone should note that the political use of the Agency’s [IAEA’s] technical platform will lead to a different response from Tehran.”

SOT, Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Farsi): “The American side must know that with the mentality of the Trump era, it cannot reach a result other than that of maximum defeat. They must come to Vienna with a real agenda and for a full implementation, that is, it should not ask for more from commitments to be added to the JCPOA, and it should not do less than its commitment in JCPOA. This is something that can definitely help us reach a conclusion quickly.”

SOT, Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Farsi): “I warn the American authorities to know their place. They have been oppressing the Iranian people for years. They have imposed economic terrorism against the Iranian people. The Islamic Republic of Iran will not wait forever for the United States to put pressure on the Iranian people through the leverage of illegal and oppressive sanctions and extraterritorial sanctions. The Islamic Republic of Iran will not wait forever for Washington to return to its commitments. This window will not be open to Washington forever. I hope that Washington and US officials know that when they come to Vienna, they should come up with an operational agenda to see how they want to implement all their commitments in the JCPOA.”

SOT, Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Farsi): “Negotiations that have begun between Iran and the P4+1, to ensure the full implementation of US commitments under JCPOA and Resolution 2231, will definitely continue. These talks must be in the best interests of the people, they must be in the interests of Iran, which, of course, has not been achieved for the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Iranian people in the past few years due to repeated violations by the United States and unfortunately European inaction. These negotiations must guarantee that the benefits entailed in the JCPOA regarding lifting the sanctions are realised. With this goal and with this mission in mind, we have not and will not delay it for even one hour to lift these oppressive sanctions.”

SOT, Saeed Khatibzadeh, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Farsi): “The Vienna talks are purely technical talks to ensure the implementation of the JCPOA by the United States and other parties. These negotiations are not to reach a new text. These negotiations are not about accepting new commitments.”
