The death toll related to the Kerala landslides and flooding, which came about after heavy rains in the region, reached over 30 on Sunday night. Footage filmed in Koottickal on Sunday shows the extent that the incessant rains have wreaked havoc in the central and southern parts of the state.
Many people have been injured and displaced due to flash floods and landslides. In one case, six members of a family lost their lives in a landslide that hit Koottickal in the Kottayam district. The family of six included a 40-year-old man, his 75-year-old mother, the 35-year-old wife, and three girl children aged 14, 12, and 10-years old were killed as their house was swept away in the landslide.
The Army, NDRF, police, and the Fire department, along with locals began rescue operations on Sunday morning at Koottickal in Kottayam district and Kokkayar in the Idukki district. At least a dozen people have been reported missing due to the landslides.

SOT, Iyappa Das, Local resident (Malayalam): “Around 9.30 am in the morning the water slowly started entering our village and our houses. If it’s raining normally the water will recede after some time. But suddenly around 10 am the water was coming with excessive force. From the other side, the water entered with massive force and damaged the walls and doors and entered our houses. we carried only our children and moved to a safe area.”

SOT, Iyappa Das, Local resident (Malayalam): “Up in the hills three houses were completely submerged and seven people died in the landslide. The rescue operation is still going on and the bodies of three children were recovered today and rescue operation is going on to find the bodies of four more people.”

SOT, Iyappa Das, Local resident (Malayalam): “What can we do when the water was coming in such a force in the morning? We haven’t got any information about the water release. Because this incident happened during the day, so the death toll was less, if it happened in the night over 1,000 people would have died.”
