Incredible Ancient City Seen For First Time With Radar Technology

The ancient Roman town of Falerii Novi, 50km north of Rome in the Italian region of Lazio, has remained hidden beneath the soil until now.

Using advanced ground penetrating radar (GPR), researchers were able to map the complete Roman town without breaking ground.

They uncovered a baths complex, market, temple, public monuments and a sprawling network of water pipes.

The technique has major implications for archaeologists trying to study ancient cities that can’t be excavated because of modern structures.

The town of Falerii Novi was first occupied in 241BC and is roughly half the size of Pompeii.
