‘Hospital Helipad DAMAGED During US Air Force Helicopter Takeoff’

Air ambulances were diverted from Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital after a US military aircraft damaged the helipad during a training exercise.

Repairs were being made to the landing zone after the force of the US Air Force helicopter’s takeoff stripped matting from the ground and scattered debris into the air.

Major Keavy Rake, of the USAF’s 48th Fighter Wing, said: “The area was surveyed according to our policies and procedures and some damage did occur.”

“We are taking steps to rectify as soon as possible. We are greatly appreciative of the relationship and coordination we have with the UK.”
