Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam said 105 COVID-19 cases have been detected in the residential blocks of Kwai Chung estate, in Hong Kong, on Saturday.

According to Carrie Lam, two residential blocks, the Yat Kwai House and the Ying Kwai House have been put into five-day lockdowns.

She also revealed at the press conference that the Omicron variant was responsible for the outbreak.
“The outbreak is also identified as Omicron BA.2, and its transmission is so strong that sources in other parts of the world, including the World Health Organization, say that the virus strain can multiply the number of confirmed cases within 2-3 days,” she said.

Under lockdown rules, residents of Yat Kwai House and Ying Kwai House cannot leave the house and have to undergo mandatory Covid tests every day. Over 35,000 people live in the public housing estate located in the town of Tsuen Wan.

SOT, Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, (Cantonese): “Today, we would like to give you an update on the latest epidemic situation of omicron mutated virus strains in Kwai Chung Village, Yat Kwai House and other buildings. I would like to tell you about the actions we have taken and the further measures I will take today to curb the spread of the epidemic. I hope to cut this chain of transmission caused by Omicron as soon as possible.”

SOT, Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, (Cantonese): “As of the press conference of the Health and Epidemic Prevention Center at 04:30 PM just now, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in various buildings in Kwai Chung District has reached 105, including confirmed or initially confirmed cases.”

SOT, Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, (Cantonese): “The outbreak is also identified as Omicron BA.2, and its transmission is so strong that sources in other parts of the world, including the World Health Organisation, say that the virus strain can multiply the number of confirmed cases within 2-3 days.”

SOT, Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, (Cantonese): “The second measure taken is that after we learned that the situation was getting bad yesterday, we also announced a five-day lock down and mandatory test through the Secretary for Food and Health yesterday. This is a relatively strict measure that we have not implemented in the past two years, and this lock down and mandatory test will last until 7 AM on the 26th, during which all residents in Yat Kwai House will have to undergo five mandatory tests.”

SOT, Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, (Cantonese): “After reviewing of the outbreak of Ying Kwai House, that is, it has just been mentioned that 8 to 10 confirmed cases have been found in the first batch of tests that began at 4 AM this morning. So the Ying Kwai House is also treated in the same way as Yat Kwai House, that is to say, five days of lockdown and compulsory testing will be carried out, and the action will be carried out immediately.”
