Locals were seen sleeping on the beach in Pefki, on the Evia island, as wildfires continued raging on Sunday night.

Residents were lying or sitting on sunbeds as the sky behind them turned orange amid the blaze.

The fires come amid the worst heatwave to strike the country in the last three decades.

Hundreds of residents of the island of Evia, which is located to the east of Athens, were evacuated by ferry on Friday while thousands of others fled the island. The fires on the island have been ongoing for the sixth day in a row, with more ferries reportedly on standby near the island.
