Forests and houses were damaged by flames in the Athens suburb of Varympompi, as helicopters continued their efforts to extinguish the spreading wildfires in the region on Sunday.

Tree branches and forest grounds kept fuming as firefighters and rescue teams worked to alleviate the pain of some animals affected by the fires, such as a tortoise that was given water by the rescuers.

Wildfires have swept across Greece, as well as Turkey, Italy, and Spain, in recent weeks as the Mediterranean countries have faced the worst heatwave in decades.
