Happy 8th Birthday Gladys! Gladys and her family are getting special enrichment treats to celebrate today. Gladys is a great ambassador for her species and continues to thrive in her family group. She still has a couple of years before she is considered fully mature for a female. But, she is at the age where she is figuring out what social role she is going to play within her family group. So you may see her playing with her sisters or off on her own showing her independence. Gladys is extremely intelligent and her favorite thing to do is use stick’s as tools to forage for food items. Her sisters have learned this behavior as well from observing Gladys’ mastery. Tool use is a natural behavior for gorillas.
In honor of Gladys’ Birthday, we ask everyone to come to the zoo and recycle their old cell phones to help save Gorillas! Western Lowland Gorillas, like Gladys, are considered Critically Endangered mainly due to deforestation. Coltan is a mineral found in all cell phones and is mined in gorilla forests in Africa which greatly reduces their home. Each cellphone that is recycled helps save gorillas in the wild by creating more forests for the gorillas to live in. Gorillas in return spread seeds from the trees that they eat, creating a healthier forest and therefore a healthier Earth!
