Germany: Gorillas grocery delivery workers lead bike strike in Berlin over pay dispute

Strikers and protesters rallied outside a Berlin-based warehouse of grocery delivery startup Gorillas on Saturday as part of a pay dispute.

“We decided to do a strike today because the demands that we put forward more than two weeks ago have not been met or there was not even like [an acknowledgment], the company didn’t discuss them and we’re not been taken seriously by the company,” explained Jascha, a striker involved in the dispute.

“So that’s why we need to show them that we’re actually here, that we actually matter, we’re the face of the company and that’s why we stopped delivering orders,” added Jascha.

According to Jascha, at least five workers were not paid in full for their work last month, despite “an attempt to pacify everyone by paying out (wages).”

The striker said issues with workers’ pay has “been the topic every single month,” requiring administrative work to correct.

“The main point is that they do not pay people their full wages, a lot of people have been missing their wages. Parts of it [have also been] issues with sick leave pay, issues with vacation days not being calculated properly,” said Jasha.

As part of an effort to get more people involved in the Gorillas’ strike, strikers and protesters went on a cycle ride between the Kaiserkorso 154 and Urbanstr. 72 warehouses operated by the startup.
