Germany: Army and police conduct joint counter-terrorism drills in Bavaria

The German army held joint counter-terrorism drills in the Bavarian city of Hof on Wednesday, as part of the GEOTEX2021 initiative.
“The police protects, the army supports. This formula we have been using for many exercises and will be done again here at the GeoTex,” explained an army spokesperson.
“The aspects behind this exercise is the protection of citizens in a life threatening situation, the cooperation between state security forces and the support of the army, those are the three aspects that play into here,” added the spokesperson.
According to the Interior Minister of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, the army could be needed to support police units “in an emergency situation and allowed by the German constitution.”
“According to the scenario of an unclear danger of possible terror attacks and prevent further threats and fatalities,” added Herrmann.
Similar joint exercises between the army and police have happened in the past, including an evacuation scenario held in the Straubing-Bogen district last October.
