National homage was paid on Thursday to the late French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, who died on Monday aged 88, at Les Invalides, Paris.
Crowds of mourners queued outside the courtyard of the complex for the chance to pay tribute at Belmondo’s coffin, which lay flanked by two guards, as a picture of the actor hung above.
A ceremony was also led by President Macron at the monument, under which Napoleon is buried, and attended by politicians, celebrities and sports stars.
Belmondo made a name for himself as part of the New Wave cinema movement in the 1950s, acting in 80 films over his extensive career, and covering a multitude of genres.
A funeral will take place for close family on Friday.
