Locals gathered at the Deryneia crossing near the abandoned Varosha quarter of the Famagusta city on Monday to protest Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s planned visit to Varosha marking the anniversary of the Turkish invasion on the island.
The protesters chanted against the visit while calling for unity between the divided parts. One protester said: “We are Cypriots. We live in Cyprus, whether we are Greek, Turkish, Maronite or Levantine, still we are all Cypriots. What’s happening right now is divisive. These people came here to cause trouble. I don’t know what else to say, sorry I am very upset.”
Erdogan’s planned visit to the site on Tuesday will mark 47 years since the Turkish invasion. He has said he would support a two-state solution to the decades old issue.
SOT, Augustino Papthomas, President of Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Greek): “We are requesting from the EU to implement European and International law. Tell us if the land that is occupied is European or not. We want international law and European laws implemented for justice.”
SOT, Protester (Greek): “We are Cypriots. We live in Cyprus, whether we are Greek, Turkish, Maronite or Levantine, still we are all Cypriots. What’s happening right now is divisive. These people came here to cause trouble. I don’t know what else to say, sorry I am very upset.
SOT, Chris, Protester (Greek): “We have gathered here, Famagustians and others, to give a clear message to Turkey, to respect UN resolutions which call for the return of the rightful owner to Varosha under UN protection until the Cyprus problem is resolved. I am sure that from the other side of the fence, our Turkish-Cypriot compatriots are fighting for the same cause. We share the same goal, which is peace in our country.”
