China: Rescue underway after Xinxiang submerged in floodwater after torrential rain

Rescue teams gathered to help and relocate people in Xinxiang, the capital of Henan province, after the region was hit by days of record-breaking torrential rain causing rivers to overflow and flood the city.

Rescue workers could be seen evacuating residents in inflatable boats and handing out bottled water to locals. About 1,400 Xinxiang households were rescued and relocated.

“Seeing the rescue team is like seeing my relatives, although men do not shed tears easily, but I am really moved, really,” said Mr Wang, a noodle shop business owner from Xinxiang.

The flooding has caused major damage to infrastructure, affecting streets, public transportation and power networks. The death toll has risen to at least 33 with people still missing, according to officials.
