China: Rescue operation underway at flooded coal mine in Xiaoyi

Rescue teams were working to extricate more than 20 people trapped by a flood at a coal mine in Duxigou village, Xiaoyi City on Thursday. Emergency service vehicles and lorries could be seen outside the industrial facility, in northern China’s Shanxi Province.

Authorities say 22 people were working in the coal mine, situated southwest of Beijing, when it was flooded due to an illegal coal mining operation at around 23:00 local time on Wednesday.

Police have detained six suspects in relation to the incident, according to the Xiaoyi government as cited in media reports.
