All residential compounds in Yangzhou’s downtown, in East China’s Jiangsu province, entered lockdown at midnight on Wednesday in a bid to curb newly rising COVID-19 infections.

Footage from the city on Tuesday and Wednesday shows residents formed long queues at testing sites across the city set up by local authorities to carry out mass testing, while people were instructed to otherwise stay in their homes, with supplies being delivered to affected communities.

Non-essential businesses were also ordered to close, with domestic travel links also suspended.

The fear of another complete lockdown has driven people to buy extra supplies in supermarkets, leaving shelves empty.

According to local sources, Yangzhou recorded 126 COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday.

China is dealing with its largest coronavirus outbreak in months as the Delta variant spreads. The government has responded with local lockdowns and mass testing in affected cities, while also suspending transport links in a bid to hinder transmission.
