Beijing’s busiest train station was uncharacteristically quiet as authorities tightened travel restrictions in the lead up to the Winter Olympics.
Footage shows reduced numbers of travellers waiting at Beijing Railway Station on Monday with the Winter Olympics just four days away.
Known locally as ‘West Station’ the railway terminal is usually packed at the beginning of the Chinese New Year holiday. However this year, millions of Chinese changed travel plans to avoid becoming stuck by the capital’s strict COVID measures which have deterred many from travelling home for celebrations.
Two new neighbourhoods in the capital were put under lockdown after several new coronavirus cases were detected on Saturday.
As part of sweeping measures to contain the spread of the virus, tickets for the Winter Olympics are not being sold to members of the public.
“Athletes are very serious about this event,” said one woman, “but for the common people like me, I don’t know much about the Olympics, or talk about it,” she said.
Main roads have been closed off and have become specifically designated for athletes, officials and guests, as authorities separate the Games from the public spaces.
